Creating an Urban Garden

Many people want to grow their own food, but most of them don’t have enough space. It is possible to garden in the city with a small space, though it won’t be as easy as gardening in a backyard. In an urban garden, you have to take full advantage of every space. Having your own garden can be great, and you will not know the feeling until you experience it. There are many people out there who gave it a try and now they are hooked.

Containers have become one of the most common options when it comes to urban garden design. They come in different shapes and sizes and can be easily moved from one place to another, making them very versatile. You can use an outdoor space such as a balcony or rooftop to put the containers. You can easily switch them with seasons. How can you create an urban garden?

  1. Getting the stuff you are going to need
You don’t need much to get started. You will need to have a planter of some kind – wood container or pottery – some soil and seedlings, depending on what you want to plant. Visit the local plant nursery specialist and tell them your goals – they are going to help you know what is needed. You should always choose quality soil because it is going to have the biggest impact on the produce you get.
  2. Select what you want to plant
Where you are going to plant is going to determine what you can plant. There are some plants that will need more light than others. The sizes of plants also vary, so the depth will not be the same. You also need to look at the soil you are going to use. You want to maximize the produce you get from your garden, and there is nothing more demotivating than getting close to nothing when you harvest. You should always follow the guidelines on the packaging of the plant.
  3. Take advantage of vertical space
Having a small space gives you a chance to grow vertically. You should choose tall plants like cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, and beans. You will be able to get more than if you plant the shorter plants. When getting started, see which of the different plants work best, so you can plant more of it the next season.

Whatever container you choose for your garden, always keep in mind drainage holes are a must. If you don’t have proper drainage, the soil will end up getting waterlogged and the plants are going to die. The holes you put must be large enough so that excess water can easily drain out.

You will need to hand water your plants every morning. When it is summer, you might need to do it in the evenings too. Giving your plants some shade can help in preventing them from drying.

Have fun
Gardening will not only give you food and flowers, but it will help in relieving stress, having fun and getting in touch with nature. Living in an apartment doesn’t mean you cannot grow your own food.
